Semiotics - Definitions

Connotation and and denotation

Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and is also anything which stands for something else.

Connotations

This is what we understand from an image that we are looking at, and what other meanings that this object may have. For example if i was thinking of connotations of a red square, i could say that the square could represent lover at is read but at the same time red is the colour of the devil so it could mean two different things at the same time.

Denotation

This is a lot simpler than connotations, this is because denotation is what we see when we look at the image. So if there was a red square, rather than saying what other meanings this could have i would simply say that i can see a red square.
